Dash cameras in Europe

I've only just found out that some other countries don't share our love of these devices. Namely Austria & Portugal, where it's apparently unlawful to even own one, so what do you guys who pass through these such places do? Do you remove them & polish away the tell tale mark on the windscreen? Ignore the rules & hope for the best (at least you'll have the film if something happens), or what?
