Hey folks,

trying to get my head round the whole MAM thing before I steal my old mans caravan next summer.

its a Fleetwood heritage TA which is plated at 1475kg i'll be towing with either a Vivaro with a tow weight ot 2000kg.

am I right in thinking its all about plated weights rather than actual weights as the kerb weight of the vivaro is probably nearer 1600kg.

utterly baffled by this. also have a Mondeo which I could tow with instead if need be.

1475 is one plated weight but we need the other one - the plated GVW (max permissible mass on the V5 doc) of the vehicle which you have not yet posted

The max weight the vehicle can be( is fully loaded) plus the max weight the trailer can be has to be less than 3500kg.

Also the max weight the car can be ( fully loaded) has to be more than the max weight the trailer can be.

The second bit is not legally correct but it is preferred in most circumstances

Many vehicles are now designed to safely tow much more than their own max weight

you be over 3.5t, even if empty they{dvsa/police} go on plated weight, gross on vivaro is 2800kg ,so only leaves 700kg for trailer. Though if you passed your test before 1997 you can drive a total of 8250kg, if after 1997 you also need to have trailer test if your trailer is over 750kg {gross weight}.

If 2800 GVW then max trailer MAM is 750 not 700

The 3500 rule does not come into force until the trailer MAM exceeds 750kg
