Self righteous truckers!
Discussion
Despite the highway code stating that vehicles should 'merge in turn', and signs on the roadworks saying 'queue using both lanes' for the third time this week I've ended up stuck behind some self righteous trucker straddling the white centreline at the start of the queue and not letting anyone past him.
So we've got lane 1 that's jam packed, a queue that stretches back much further than it should, blocking the preceding junctions and roundabouts and impeding other traffic that's simply trying to cross over the dual carriageway, yet lane 2 on the dual carriageway ahead of the truck is completely empty and unused!
Arghhh, for god sake you selfish pr**ks! Stop trying to play god, stop causing inconvenience to others and let the traffic flow as it was intended.

...and you - the one person who has the solution to this utter madness! Surprising the queue didn't part like the Red Sea just for you... .Wouldn't the signs say, drive down the centre line making one lane instead of two?
Exactly, the signs say merge in turn. So use both lanes until the merge point reducing the length of the queue and freeing up entrances to / from side roads etc.
I just assume the trucker is a blue collar peasant, generally bitter about his poxy life, jealous of those drivers in nice cars or the wealthy retired who couldn't care a toss if he wants to hold everybody up for an extra few minutes. If it makes him feel better & the miniscule power he momentarily is able to express compensates for being a loser then so be it.

If this was the right thing to do wouldn't everyone be doing it, not just one trucker?

...Is one course of action. The other for a reasonable person confronted with a queue would be to join it. As we all do in various situations in life. But behind the wheel everything changes doesn't it? Why d'you think that is?Wouldn't the signs say, drive down the centre line making one lane instead of two?

Well I suppose you'll just have to queue then. Like everyone else.
If there's going to be a queue, might as well make it as short as possible for everyone, and there's no point having empty tarmac.Numerous proofs, but here's a nice article: http://www.welikela.com/studies-show-merge-lanes-d...
I guess the problem is what is best for the overall population of drivers feels like a bad deal for the early merger. So don't merge early.
The instruction is to use both lanes and merge in turn.
It's not about queuing mentality it's about following the (clearly spelt out) rules of the road for this situation.
If the OP had continued down lane 2 at the speed limit an the truck had swerved into his path to block him, and caused an accident...then the truck would be to blame for not following the instructions or the Highway Code.
Moronic behaviour by the truck, also moronic behaviour of the single file queue in lane 1 when an empty lane 2 exists and a sign says use it!!

FMLIt's a really simple concept. Can you not just take a min to think about it rather than joining the moronic imbeciles who indignantly rush to join a line of standing traffic and expect everyone else to do the same.
If you can't understand the basics of multi lane roads and do not like people passing you you should maybe stick to single carriageways.
I dread to think what would happen if someone tied to overtake. Would you block their manoeuvre because they weren't queuing up behind you?

Isn't it precisely that? People would rather avoid any confrontation or doubt so where there's the slightest hint of a queue they want to join it. Especially in the UK. This kind of group behaviour is easily observable in many daily situations.popeyewhite said:

Well, the option is to join either the longer queue or join the shorter queue. By the truckers actions, he is preventing that choice from being exercised, and is preventing the full use being made of the available road space.

The merge in turn procedure that occurs (or at least should occur) on the roads is very rarely replicated in other non-motoring situations. Could you perhaps give us some examples of where you think such behavior is observable in many daily situations?

That is your opinion. I've no doubt his is that everyone else is queuing so he's blocking queue jumpers. A public service, if you like.By the truckers actions, he is preventing that choice from being exercised, and is preventing the full use being made of the available road space.
