The van forum doesn't get much traffic so said I would ask here . Anyone know how they are selling / see many around ? You may or may not know they are made by Saic - who also own MG .

I am interested to know how they are doing as I live in Ireland and they are distributed in Uk and Ireland by a long est. Dublin company - Harris Group ( known for Hino trucks) - think they bought about 3,000 vans in from china which are stored at their Dublin site.

I read in Autocar not long ago that LDV return was going to include 2 new vehicles. One EV and one other, but I dont think these are available yet?

I have nothing to add apart from that I rented a van a few years back to move some stuff and got presented with an LDV.

Within five miles it was obvious that it was a massive pile of junk. The demise of LDV (while regrettable) was unavoidable while they were churning out this garbage in an attempt to compete with rival vans.

I had a demo van in about 2 months ago, it looked ok, drove ok and I was expecting it to be very cheap.

Is it really surprising, given that the Convoy and Pilot were basically an unchanged 1974 Freight Rover with a new grille?

I see the new model is a Maxus with a new grille.... Nothing like carrying on the tradition!

+9000.

Going back a few years we used to do many (bike) trackdays and rented a van each time. As such I got to see pretty much every single make. LDV stood head and shoulders above the rest as being absolutely awful. Slow, uncomfortable, noisy, poor mpg and shockingly put together. After that I would refuse to hire from anywhere that used them, it just wasn't worth it!

They aged in dog years! biggrin

Over the weekend I saw two new ones parked up at Edgbaston. One a standard one and the other an EV model. Didn't know anyone was remaking them.

36 x £410 = £14,760 + £1,230 = £15,990. For a van that retails at £12,995.

Sod renting them, then. Buy 'em. Even if they're only worth three or four grand after three years, you're quids in. Probably cheaper than the Tranny rental.
<thinks> Does the maintenance include sticking back the bits that fall off, as well as just servicing?

just before they went under, the Royal Mail had that many warranty claims in with them that they couldn't fulfill, they just gave them the last 40 vans they had. still got a batch of towbars here for LDV vans that we never fitted frown

They were shockingly bad. Word was the leccy board were buying fleets at half the price of a tranny despite the retail being on par. Terrible, horrible things, one of the foreman got told off for refusing two brand new ldvs on delivery and saying his lads would keep the 10 year old transits they were supposed to be replacing.

Afraid I know nothing about new van prices, but is a Transit really only £7k new + VAT?

TBF to LDV, we bought a Leyland DAF 3.5t (twin rear tyre) dropside pickup and it would haul full payload all day long. It's just it deafened the driver in the process, but apart from that, they were unbelievably tough.

I was thinking the same thing. AFAIK even a basic low spec Transit is closer to £15k+vat, though likely to be a much nicer van than the LDV.

I'm presuming he meant the contract hire monthly.

Not forgetting the Sherpa was basically a Morris J4 with a bonnet, so the origins are even older than 1974...

the CH prices look ok compared to a new Transit. a 130 trend would be around 4500 initial payment and about 190 per month for 59 months. add the balloon of 6000 at the end and you're over 21k for the Transit.
