I have to do some lorry driving this week, did a bit last week as well. I am not a lorry drive by trade and The Management has sent me to do some work for a contractor that works for us to help him out.

I don't have 28 days worth of tacho discs, because I haven't done 28 days worth of driving. When I finish this little job what would happen if I was to be put on our own lorry in the next month? Would I have to carry the tachos from the other job?

Also. Vosa. They seem to like to prowl all of the lay-bys where all the lorries pull it at break time. I hate being disturbed at break time, no matter who it is, which I why I normally go home at break times. This isn't an option while lorry driving, so could I tell them to bugger off if they came knocking and to come back when my break is over?

It's one for Rog really, but I'll have a stab- 1st tho assume you have a driver cpc? Unless its an exempt reason for driving it?

Ref discs you may be asked to prove your work hours tho so they know if you have had sufficient rest before driving, a work diary or clock in cards on you etc. For the next lorry ideally yes keep the ones for last 28 days.

Ref break, yip you could tell 'em to do one till break is over as really by dealing with them on break its not technically a break, but not sure how that would sit with them, are some on truck sites say they've done it & had no issues, but your call.

Have you got a CPC ? If not your breaking the law .
keep your tachographs for at least 28 days .
Tell the inspectors what you like but bend over and be prepared to receive !

Are you ??

I was rooting through today wondering whether to just do my medical to reinstate my C+E entitlement (as i can't be bothered with the CPC) so i can do a bit of moving trucks around to help out a couple of pals, The odd Mot and 'truck' delivery etc and it clearly isn't my main job as that is 37 hrs a week sat in an office frown

Basically, I work on a farm and we have our own lorry for delivering produce. There are two drivers for the lorry but one of them is often off sick (don't get me started) so he needed an emergency driver. I had a week on it November last year when the main lorry driver was off long term sick and the other driver hurt his back.

Now I have been asked to help out for construction contractor who is short of a driver for a week or so. I don't keep records of hours worked (VOSA would have heart failure if they saw what I had to do for 4 months of the year). Once Christmas comes I will have 2 weeks off no matter what, then have the remainder of 46 days holiday to take before the end of the financial year, so won't be in work much anyway, never mind driving a poxy lorry. I will probably be making mistakes on the tacho and the lorry due to lack of practice, but I can probably drive a lorry better than they can operate my potato harvester.

I am fully CPC'd up.

Paper.

2002 Scania 82. My tractor is light years ahead of it. In fact, a 2002 tractor is light years ahead of it.

If it were me I would just spend a couple quid on a new box of tacho charts, put all of my used ones back in the box at the end of the day and keep the box in the rattly old scania letting the other two drivers know that it's yours and not to touch it.

If you go jump in someone elses lorry just take the box with you.

A fixed week is sunday midnight to sunday midnight

If you drive under EU regs in any part of a fixed week then official records must be made for any other sort of work done in that week

Easiest way is to use separate analogue cards - one for each day of work- with your name date start and finish time on each - after 29 calendar days they can be binned

No records are needed for a week where no EU regs driving was done

The reason for the records is to show the daily & weekly rest periods

I was going to make a similar post: if you drive under EU regs in any part of a week then your work hours need to comply with EU regs for the remainder of the week. People seldom seem to realise this.

So the tacho discs belong to me then and I take them with me when this job is done?

I had another look today and it's a 94D and compared to tractors of the same era is very poor to drive. No room in the cab, no air conditioning, comedy seat that goes up and down of it's own volition, god awful transmission, vague steering and I still dislike air brakes with a passion. The engine has plenty of grunt though.

The charts belong to the operator but you keep them until your obligation to carry them has passed.

Tacho discs used in the vehicle go to the operator

Tacho discs used to record non vehicle days do not go to the operator

Had this a few year ago at Forton Services, parked up on break dossing about on my phone,
Knock at the door, "Vosa"
"I am on my break" and looked away,
Knock knock "Vosa"
"I am on my break", I didnt open the door for him, he walked away shaking his head. I was fully expecting to be pulled further down the road but nothing.

The way I see it, they are more than happy to bk you for not taking sufficient breaks and rest periods, So I aint gonna give them the privilege.
