Doing my Class 2 &1
Discussion
Hi all, been van driving for too long now, time to actually make a living from driving so planning on doing my class training all the way up to class one in a single hit. I found this on jobsite
http://www.jobsite.co.uk/job/train-to-be-a-hgv-dri...
Works out at £3600, includes theory, 16 hours training for class 2, class 2 test, 16 hours training for class 1, class 1 test, 2 re-tests if I fail with an additional 4 hours training, my CPC, tachometer card and a guaranteed job interview, the whole lot takes 16 weeks from start to finish and I can pay it off monthly if I want. Sounds ace? Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? I think their projected earnings may be a little off for Cornwall but I do have an agency ready to take me on the day I pass my test for class 1 work £24000 pa.
Also, assuming I pass, what's the most profitable type of class 1 haulage? I really want to work my arse off and make this pay, I'm 29 with 3 kids, no mortgage, need to get cracking!
Cheers.

No, no And thrice no!
Don't give your money to lying bds like those! They'll promise everything and deliver nothing, I fell for this one for my class 2 when I was young and foolish. 9 years I've been waiting for my "guaranteed interview"...
Find yourself a nice local respected one man band type of training school. Probably be cheaper and with a higher standard of training.
Best of luck with your tests.

Agree about steering clear of this type of thing via an agency.
You could try Gregory Distribution, not sure how far they are from you but they were advertising for new drivers to be trained up from car licence, paid a salary from when you start training and then you repay them via your wage every month with, I suspect, a clause in your contract regarding full payment should you decide to leave early. At least this way you are fully employed rather that literally being the agencies biatch.

I spoke to Gregory, they advertised 3 weeks ago, within 2 days they had over 200 applications, they're obliged to offer 8 positions a month so there's a chance but not sure I can wait that long for what could be an age. I'm knocking on 30 still earning sweet f.a. So need to get cracking! I think the driver cpc is ace from my stand point it has flushed the old semi retired guys/ farmers / guys doing it for a bit of extra out of the system , the very same guys who would work for peanuts to top up their pensions and or other incomes and by doing so hold down the pay rates for the rest of us who need to earn a living.
I say this as a ex driver recruiter who used these very same guys as they would work for less than guys who needed to earn a decent wage. here in the east midlands I have already noticed an increase in job adverts for hgv drivers

I'd always thought classes 1, 2 and 3 were scrapped in 1997 when the licence categories changed.
Old farts like me will know what you mean but it's been C1, C and C + E for a long time hasn't it?
Very true and those using the old terminology can make thing confusing as they refer to totally different thingsOld farts like me will know what you mean but it's been C1, C and C + E for a long time hasn't it?
1991 was the change not 1997
