Long story short, they paid for my class 1 in march, was averaging 60/65 hrs and 3 nights a week out but slack weeks it was only 2.

this month ive had 2 50 hr weeks and no nights out all month.

Now me telling him this may sound harsh, but the other lads have had 70/80 hr weeks and nights out all week, so I broached the subject at the begingin of the week and got told it was coming etc.

Nothins come hrs or nights out, well sat here tonight after id asked the question again tonight seein as its Friday tomorrow and got brushed aside basically, so mithered myself abit and rang him up asking how much its goin cost me to leave??

(the others have still been out all week)

Instantly hes on the defensive (you carnt leave etc why do you want leave) so ive told him flat 50 hrs is of no use to me, neither is working a sat to "top" my money up.

Im not a well off man but im comfortable and with my "flat" earning I could cover all my bills and still be comfortable, but the extras pay for the enjoyments in life, so if im not goin to afford them ive no reason to want to go to work for them.

He just said ill see you when you get back tomorrow, I genuinely like the job and they ve been good to me in regards to paying for me to do it etc, but im goin end up on less this month than when I was on a rigid.

Think I should of just handed my notice in now and dealt with it then.

Am I right to be mithered? or should I just man and take getting treated like a doormat?

I think if you're not happy with how it is there, then you are definetly doing the right thing by telling them. It seems unfair to me that some are getting the o.t and nights out, (and i guess it is always the same faces) on a regular basis whilst others are losing out. It should be shared out.
Unfortunately there are plenty of firms out there that are like this. You will always come across the blue eyed boys scenario, and i can understand a firm looking after its long term 'good' workers, but then the newer employees that are just as good at the job, in my opinion should get their fair bite at the cherry aswell.
At least you've told them how you feel, its upto them now to either deal with it fairly or ignore it?
If it were me, and i felt they hadn't dealt with it after having a chat with them, i'd be looking to move on, and once i'd found something i'd hand my notice in and move on.

I woudln't and won't ever work somewhere that treats you as a door mat and doesn't play ball. A few have tried, and i never stayed.

Ah the old "jam tomorrow" promise.

If you can get more money for less hassle elsewhere then take it.

If you can't, then stick it out until you can.

Work is a 2 way exploitation. You continue to turn up because at the time it's the most money you can get for the least hassle, and they continue to keep paying you because it's the most work they can get for the least money. It's a win win or lose lose situation.

Don't resign. Talk to the boss, explain the hardship of not enough hours and explain that sooner or later you may have to start looking for a new position, but you'll try to be patient for a couple of months.

Then look for something better.

It really is a sad indictment of the trucking world when a 50 hour week doesn't pay enough to afford life's little luxuries. I had to call in a heating engineer last week to repair my broken boiler; he charged £70 per hour or part thereof, plus v.a.t. Perhaps things will change next month when CPC kicks in & there is a predicted driver shortage, but I doubt it.

That driver shortage you speak of, it's been on the cards for twenty years that I know of. As long as you have driver asking questions like "Can I legally work 16 hours a day" we're all fked. aholes who want a shiny truck that looks good and don't care how much they earn are one of the biggest problems with this industry.

I don't understand why you are asking how much it will cost you to leave because they paid for your class 1... They wanted you to move from class 2 ridged to class one. You did it because you thought you would get paid more but it didn't work out that way... You could argue that it has worked to your detriment so why should you pay for a down grade in your income. If they didn't have a need to make you a class 1 driver they wouldn't pay for it.

i understand where your coming from, but they ve still paid and ive never expected a free ride as such, so I asked the question.

But I keep hearing conflicting advice regards them payin for it, as they ve paid for it for there gain as such?

So they cannot claw it back from me etc if I leave by handing my notice in or just walking.

Even companies who are organised enough to get employees to sign something in writing about refunding training costs, will find it hard to actually get the money back. It's something that employment law specialists would run a chariot of fire through.
