The problem with tachographs is that they're sealed against tampering with lead seals so any work you do on it that breaks a seal means you'll need to get it remade at an approved tachograph centre. For that reason it may well be better to just take the vehicle to an approved centre in the first place and get them to fix it.
The grief you and your drivers would get using an unsealed tachograph would far outweigh the cost of having it looked at by a specialist.
