Truck Driving Agencies
Discussion
Looking to help a mate of mine out who is going to be looking for some work when he goes back to the UK in Easter for the summer. (In Thailand now)
He is an experienced driver, including driving tankers etc and his licenses are all up to date, but he has not been back in the UK working for 2 years and has lost his word of mouth contacts so I said I would ask about and find the details on any good agencies etc that might be hiring, that he can make a first approach from here before going back to the UK.
So, I am asking on his behalf here - what are the good companies / agencies for drivers?
Cheers.

Decent agencies are few and far between, they promise the earth and deliver very little. If an agency told me the grass was green I'd look outside and check for myself. They are what's helped go a long way to destroying drivers wages in the transport industry, far too many agencies undercutting each other at the expense of drivers wages.................on another note, Manpower ain't too bad for an agency..............where is this fella going to be based in the uk??
I have a good friend in the same position as your mate, he stays and works in the Northampton area, lots of work, from personal experience if your mate has no ties tell him to go there, its a hotspot for work, agency work differs wildly depending on where your based, some areas you would be mad to work the agency, some areas you would be mad not to.
I spent 2 years on agencies for random office work when I first started up the city trying to figure out what I wanted to do, they were brilliant if you had a mate working in them. I had a look in a few a while back including manpower, I wouldn't touch one unless I knew someone working in there and could get the work that I wanted.
Having done a number of years agency work, the best tip I could give is get yourself known, be a person not just "driver". Be as ass kissing and obliging as possible on your first few jobs. Do whatever it takes to make the company ask for you specifically. Once you get requested the agency then reckon you're worth dealing with and won't make them look bad.
( this does assume you're not a total trumpet...)
But bear in mind the numpties help good agency drivers keep consistency as they make you look better

I work for Manpower (6 years), Been very good to me paid for my HIAB and my ADR Was previously with Pertemps for a number of years Got my class 2 and 1 through them (didn't pay a penny) Agencies have served and continue to serve me well!

I've worked for agencies for years, never found a bad one. I treat them how i'd expect to be treated, Working for Manpower at present, no problems at all.
