An interesting situation has come about with the issuing of the new style driving licences
By changing the photo on the photocard even if it is not due to be changed gets a new style licence back with the LGV/PCV expiry date in 2018
This works with using the online passport photo or doing it at the post office or directly to DVLA
Only financially useful to those where the next D4 medical is due within the next 3 years - ish
In my case it was a little more interesting ....
2008 - age 50 - D4 medical done but put on short term LGV due to glaucoma - 3 year eye only check required
2011 - age 53 - eye check only done but licence comes back with 2014 for next D4 including eye test
2013 - age 55 - photo needs changing so pays £24.50 at PO
Licence back from DVLA with LGV expiry/D$ needed in 2018 when aged 60
No more 3 year eye check and 10 years between D4 medicals
