Sounds like a good idea to me.
Wish it had been the same when I was learning. I passed in a little ford cargo, with a straight 6 box and tiny 30 ft flatbed trailer.
1st artic I drive in my own was an f plate m a n with the eaton twin splitter, pulling a 45ft curtain side trailer loaded with 26 pallets of newspapers.
That was a learning curve :0

From what ive read its not fully loaded but it ll be a lot better with a load on more use of the gears etc
and like you say, you ll not have a newbie then passin and going out at 44t and thinking "oh fk" when they come to a hill. (up or down)
Funny really ive got my class one assessment this sat, as work are paying for me to do it, im now really looking forward to it.

Same here, MAN 16.321 on an A plate with a Fuller box I think. And appalling brakes by todays standards.Wish it had been the same when I was learning. I passed in a little ford cargo, with a straight 6 box and tiny 30 ft flatbed trailer.

That shows the basic principals allowed a driver to go onto other typesWish it had been the same when I was learning. I passed in a little ford cargo, with a straight 6 box and tiny 30 ft flatbed trailer.

I also passed in a straight 6 with flat trailer in 1988 but had no great issues with other types I came across because I opened my mouth and asked others for a quick run through
There is no reason that the learners of today cannot do the same

Only if taken with a manual gearbox but from next year the test can be taken in an auto and the driver be given manual if they have B (car) manualSeems daft to me as my experience on coaches was gearboxes are somewhat more interesting to use than in cars especially on older stuff.

Will it be the same for PSV too?
YesThose with D auto and B manual on their licences will get D manual when they renew their licence for any reason

Wait for the sudden glut of applications to coach companies then. For years buses have trained autos & people have had to convert to work for proper coach companies doing tours.
There's having a manual license and then there's being able to drive manuals. Where I used to work there were a few drivers that even though they had stick licenses they weren't allowed out in one - as they'd come back with no clutch..R0G said:

Interesting, I have D auto and B manual, need to send off my licence due to change of address, will it come back as D manual then?!Those with D auto and B manual on their licences will get D manual when they renew their licence for any reason
Seems a bit crazy seeing as I've never been near the driving seat of a coach...

That's rigid isn't it? I loose track of the classes I don't have.
Simple = forget all the old HGV classes because they are well goneIts all LGV now - vehicles with no more than 9 seats in total
C1 = 3.5 to 7.5
C = anything over 3.5 - no upper limit
C1+E = C1 with a trailer and a max GTW of 12 tonnes (not the same as total MAM of 12 tonnes)
C+E = C with a trailer - no upper limit
Pre 1997 C1+E with 107 code = max total MAM limit of 8.250 (not the same as total GTW of 8.250 tonnes)
