Are Renault Magnums any good?

The reason I ask is I own a tipping scrap trailer. I fill it approx. twice a week and have to pay someone to come in, haul it away, empty it and bring it back. I've been looking at buying a tractor unit so I can do it myself. Done a bit of driving myself for other people but not much, mainly Volvos and Scanias, found them good. Volvos were super reliable, Scanias were super comfy.

Anyway, my budget is 6K give or take. I see a lot of Magnums on the market for 4.5k plus. Are they cheap for a reason? I like the way they look though, especially the matte black one Clarkson had on TG.

I ran a magnum as an o/d for a couple of years , it was the 480 model.
it was always reliable but thirsty, the interiors on then are nowhere near the spec of Volvo or scanias ,
if I was looking for an occasional use motor I would deff go Volvo.
as some one who has all three marks in my time I can tell you that the back up is second to none for the Volvo but scanias never seem to have parts and Renault after a certain mileage have a fault in the gearbox that can be very expensive to fix

They were never that popular over here hence the price, they weren't particuarly bad but Renaults never had a great reputation for reliability. If you're only going to use it occasionally then i don't see a problem. If you wanted to do daily work then i would probably look at a Volvo or Daf

I'd agree with this, the Magnum is a great cab and deserves its place in history, but I would have the Volvo, Scania's I wouldn't entertain, too unreliable and the Cabs are too compromised.

Striking looking motor for sure.

We had one on demo at TDG. I watched as a driver did the classic of undoing the suzies with the brake off. I watched as the unit slid off the 5th wheel & rolled into the dock at all of 5mph & it must have hit the sweet spot as the cab detached from the chassis. We didn't take them on the fleet.
