Hi, I have been told, that on the Scottish island of North Uist, anything over 2.5t doesn't need an MOT.

And that you can drive a HGV on a car license.

Does anyone know if this is true?

I would doubt that is true. The islands will still be policed but there will not be many of them.

The purpose of this consultation exercise is to seek views on the Department’s proposals to remove a number of exemptions from the Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) roadworthiness testing scheme. The consequence would be that operators of vehicles in currently exempt HGV classes would, in future, be required to have their vehicles tested annually.


HGVs based in seven Scottish islands.


Vehicles having a base or centre in any of the following islands, namely, Arran, Bute, Great Cumbrae, Islay, Mull, Tiree or North Uist from which use of the vehicle on a journey is normally commenced.

The consultation is to make them non exempt, as the law stands, they need no test.

Surprised that Arran & Bute are both on that list. Both are fairly large islands & both have fairly substantial bus fleets (Stagecoach on Arran, West Coast Motors on Bute). Wonder if the buses need to get taken off the island every year for an MoT.

Yeah, I knew there were exemptions on some of the islands( some you dont need road tax either) bur Arran & Bute surprised me too.
