Overnights - Cash or Bank?
Discussion
I'm after any driver's preferences please. We currently pay overnights out to our drivers in cash. This adds up to a significant amount each week which is becoming a pain to administer.
Do people on here still get their overnights paid in cash, or do your employers pay it directly into you bank - either with your wages or as a separate payment?

My last job, ( i'm yard shunter now at a RDC) I was paid cash for nights out and expenses, I finished that job 2 months ago so yes firms still do it, I have worked for firms that don't as well, on a personnel front I by far and away prefer being paid cash, I will live on the money in the week and put petrol in my car, maybe take the wife out on it, I know its all the same money but it is nice to do things like that and now touch the bank.
Is there an additional cost to having and distributing cash, when you could so easily do everything by BACS transfer?
What does that cost add up to in a month ?
Why not pay some of the savings in additional wages to those that agree to BACS.
There is no excuse for having cash anywhere near any business these days.

So there's been no increase to night out money for twenty years then! I wonder if the transport managers would spend the night in their office after a day at work for that much?
I think hes asking what we get paid.
£23 for me and parking paid by the firm.

Jobs on its arse.
Nice to see overnight money avoiding inflation.......
Should be in cash, after all its for you to spend when out?
I used to get £20 & had a company credit card for parking & meals etc. That was about 15 years ago.
Compare it to what an office based worker would get if staying away for work

Thanks for the insight, it's been very helpful.
As for payments, we pay 24.50 tax free in cash, plus around £9.00 taxed per night which gets paid with the wages.
The drivers also claim for whatever parking they've used but not food. Although, some of them are clever / lucky enough to park where they get food vouchers included in their parking. This gives them the overnight cash to do what they want with it.

Still not enough for,me to consider going back to living where I work all day. As for being clever/lucky, have you tried living on motorway service food? As for payments, we pay 24.50 tax free in cash, plus around £9.00 taxed per night which gets paid with the wages.

Yes, spent 10 months commuting from Glossop to London 5 days a week! Lived in the services back then... or rather had to make do with Ginsters and eat it in the car.Probably a bad choice of words, but, if you're going to have to eat services food, you may as well attempt to do it on the company rather than from your own pocket.
To compare, we pay for a Travelodge for our sales reps, but they have to pay for their evening meal.

So they're doing alright then. How much is a room with your own toilet/shower/bath? I know it won't change, the double standards in transport stink!Probably a bad choice of words, but, if you're going to have to eat services food, you may as well attempt to do it on the company rather than from your own pocket.
