Simon, had plenty of contact with recovery guys over the years fortunately not accident jobs just breakdowns;daf aid man 24 etc. I can relate to that. In my experience it's usually someone who knows nothing about the job that shouts loudest . Police and factory health and safety men alike. Coppers just want it out of the way NOW , h&s say the same but when you open the toolbox they get all safe systems of work and safety inductions on you. Satisfying when you get one out of a seemingly impossible situation though.
To be fair, one officer aside, I never had problems with the traffic police in South Wales. Never rushed, never any hesitation to shut down a lane for safety, or completely shut down the M4 to turn a truck around, or call for back up to do a rolling road block. I can't say this would be the same for all the UK, but down here it certainly was. Maybe the fact that we were actually working for them helped.
Issues I could relate to was the poor pay, stupidly long hours, no pension, seeing all those written off vehicles waiting for someone to pay due to insurance companies holding out, or just simply refusing to pay.
The other issue was the things you see as a recovery op dealing with major RTC's, I've seen some nasty stuff in the time I was doing it, and then an hour after dealing with it, your back out rescuing someone off the side of the M4, just getting on with the job.
I've actually managed to get out of the recovery industry now, but despite all the above issues...and having a few close shaves and losing a colleague in the process, I'd still love to get back into it, just a shame there's no real respectable companies working in my area at the moment.
