Looking at buying a tilt & slide recovery truck (somewhere between 7.5t - 11t) and the older ('96-'01) DAF FA's seem to come up at reasonable prices, and the crewcab versions have plenty of room.

Anyone got any experience with these or recommend any alternatives?

Cheers smile

Excellent, best of the 7.5 to 11 tonners out there still. Go for the biggest engine you can, don't be afraid of the as tronic transmission although it's rare in the LF range. Built in Leyland from components that have been around and everybody knows them, Cummins engine in a DAF suit, only weak point on some is front wheel bearing failure. This was attributed to the way the axle was assembled and most will have had the fix by now.

Thats reassuring thumbup

I know they don't look the most modern machine on the road, I'm just after solid and reliable.

I've got a fair bit of experience with Cummins engines (iSBE, L10, B-series etc), I guess it's a B-series in the DAF? Most of the ones i'm looking at are the 150bhp variant - what other options were there?

Thanks!

Yes it's basically the isb. Ad blue adds complication, euro 5 on but nothing that can't be fixed. Power output up to 250 as i recall, the basic running gear is used way up to the LF 65 at 18 t gvw. Compared to it's bigger cousins, the CF and XF range they were a joy to work on. The cab is a Renault design, Volvo use it too. They don't seem to suffer from eletrical issues like the CF and XF,i always suspected the regime at Eindhoven was a little too relaxed... Schmokey break ? yah, why not...

130 na 130 turbo 150 160 turbo 7.5 ton.. the bigger 10/12 tonners had higher options upto 210 I think, if you get a euro 2 one the face lift 45 they have an intercooler and its easy to ajust the full fuel screw for a little more go!!hehe all mechinical injection they went to the Common rail ISB 4 or 6 for the LF (2001 on)

Ok, so something like this should be fitted with a late 150bhp B-series 5.9 with intercooler?
