I figured this would be the best place to ask smile

I have an assessment day at one of the bus companies in a few weeks - as well as the exams and interview there will be a "preliminary driving assessment". I wondered if anybody has any tips at all that they might be looking for but may not be obvious? Particularly relating to the driving assessment, any ideas what vehicle they are likely to use for that?

Feeling fairly confident and really want the job so fingers crossed it goes well smile

Many thanks!

Have you got a provisional for a PCV?

I've seen a transit minibus around our way in bus company training colours, maybe it's one of them?

Can't be more help really, I prefer it when my cargo doesn't answer back wink

I don't, no smile Now you've mentioned it I've seen a few Transits in the company colours so could be right there.

And that's all part of the fun, I hope at any rate! biggrin

Is the assessment for a job because you have a PCV or is it an assessment with a view to training for a PCV ??

You'll probably go out in a van. Check your side mirrors every 4 seconds, if you're going to be stopped for more than 4 seconds put the handbrake on, don't drive over any kerbs. Drive smoothly and sensibly, keep calm.

May I ask what the pay is like?

R0G, it is an assessment with a view to gaining my PCV with the company, currently I only hold Cat B smile

This is perfect, thank you smile

I'm unsure of what the exact pay is to be honest, it wasn't advertised. The general consensus on London bus driving seems to be around £25k, depending on how much overtime you put in, although I presume that's after a year or two qualifying period with the company?

Id imagine that theyre trying to establish whether youll be a liability in a bus, or not (and if not: no job! hehe).

This cant be in a bus in the road unless you already have a vocational provisional, which I presume you dont.

If theyre taking you on to train then Im sure that theyll explain this and pay for the medical etc.

Most people fail their bus test with the DSA, but I hear that its far easier with the old bus companies who employ their own trainers and examiners... biggrin

It will be in a van in that case

I saw th TV programme where they followed a few potential recruits for london bus and many went over kerbs in a van - I kid you not !!

Oh and obviously do the push pull steering thing like on your driving test, the hardest maths question will prob be something like if a man buys 3 adult tickets for £1.20 and one child ticket for whatever and gives you a tenner how much change will you give him. Read the highway code. I wore a suit, nobody else did. I got the job. I think a lot of people think they can walk into a job as a bus driver but there is a lot of competition these days. Good Luck!

Make sure to note signs as you drive past them, as the assesor will likely ask you 100 yards down the road what the last sign was!

Ours used to be in a Ford Fiesta, until someone blew it up. Not me. Just drive smoothly and safely - they won't expect perfection, just a "is suitable for training and isn't a homicidal maniac". Anything you want to know, PM me... biggrin

If anything it's more difficult where I work, (I passed mine before I came here) they really don't want to have people hitting buses. Saying that their pass rate is 100% though!

I used to work for a company that had it's own examiners. I should have failed my test due to a few stupid things, but I got given a pass as I listed all three of them when asked how I'd done. That was beaten by someone else on the training bus at the same time as me, he managed to destroy both sides of a bus at once. One side on bollards & the other on a fire engine hehe Right in the town centre with passengers on too.

Best of luck - feel free to drop a PM with any questions, before, during and after training. And above all, remember to keep calm.

Just thought I'd update this; had a bit of a sticky issue from a previous company's comically inefficient HR department deciding that they didn't really need to provide a reference so starting took longer than I had hoped. However, got there in the end and I passed my test today first time woohoo Type training & route learning next week and then I think I'm out (albeit with a mentor!).

Once again I'd just like to offer a sincere thanks to all of you who gave advice smile The fun starts here hehe
