Over the last months work, transport have rang and said bring a bag drive you ll not get back.

No problem nice to be told etc.

Anyway lets say its 10 times hes said that to me, out of the 10 ive made it back probably 6 times and in good time to.

Not broke my neck, chased my arse etc just got on.

I got back today was a little tight on drive time (4 mins left) walked in the office to hand in paper work, and he chunters, Your back again? How?

So im sat here a little disgruntelled to be fair, i dont take the piss (where wages and being paid for stuff you aint done etc are concerned) but im begining to wonder what the problem is?

I go out get the job done and get back, my thoughts are if im back there not paying parking or paying me a night out.

Not exactly a world shattering problem just wanted to vent as the mind is ticking.

I don't think it was meant in a derogatory way, just a general comment.

If t's only you that does the run i don't see the problem, but if others do it and stay out i'd guess you're causing problems. Not agreeing, just reckoning.

The OP isn't causing a problem if what you suggest is the case - all he would be showing is that the run can be done without a night out; so those nighting out should be asked why they are. At the same time, it should be established how the OP is managing it in a shift when the others aren't. A decent planner would know how to investigate this.

When I was a planner, I was always pleased when a driver I didn't think would make it back, did make it back - made my life easier for next day planning.

We all do varied routes, could be north one day and south the next.

We all drive Mercs, i and another lad have 26t the others have 18t.

Im not overly bothered, i was just venting as hes said it afew times now and it got me thinking last night.

Only thing i can do is possibly check the other runs in the morning before i go then see who does/doesnt get back.

But thats a bit stalkerish.

To my mind, it's someone who is aware of the operation and what's happening in it - that's a good thing.

I sort of have this problem, I'm on a contract that only 3 drivers work on. This contract has been going for about ten years, has had the same drivers on it for most of that time and they have steadily dragged the jobs out so that everything takes twice as long as it should.

They've had the shock of their lives because it drives me crazy to work like that as I've always worked job and knock and can't stand dragging stuff out, the batchers face where we load from when I was constantly doing jobs in 2 hours that took the others 5 was priceless hehe

Another one of the original drivers left and now I've got a mate in there who works like me, life has been made easier for everyone we deliver and collect from because they are all on a set wage and are now getting to finish early, they even bought us a couple of cases of beer for christmas.

This is what happens when you pay people by the hour and not by how much work they do, keep doing what you are doing if that's the way you like to work.

Up until i got this job i like you have always been on job and knock, so simple stuff like when you arrive at a drop you out and looking for someone to tell you where they want the stuff etc.

I dont like hanging about i can sit on my sofa and relax rather than in the lorry.

Another note after my 1st months employment, i was asked in the office to dicuss my breaks, they werent happy with me doin a 15/30 min dead and goin, wanted me to do 20/35 or 50 mins.

I took it on board and have an extra 2 mins.

20/35? Odd. Very odd. What is their reasoning?

I can only assume its so that they are totally confident nobody slips under the legal requirement?

this!
the 1st gen digi tacho are tempremental, so if your doing a 15/30 break, best to do a 16/31. yes its daft but keeps it all legit. our lot say do a 20 and a 35 to be on the safe side.

op, if your happy doing the job your way, and your not breaking any laws, then carry on as you are.

Yea thats the long and the short of it.

Basically told me that no one in the company would say a word about you havin an extra 5 mins on your tacho breaks, would it look good to vosa? there must be another reason behind it, i think anyway bu tin my eyes 5 mins extra is a little extreme.

It's very odd - I've never come across it in 10 years (granted, not that long compared to some).

I can't see VOSA giving a st - as long as you're legal, what does it matter that you've a five minute buffer?
