can't stand them.
normally found on wagons that have spanish bull horns inthe windscreen, dream catchers etc. normally owned by proper, (over the water) drivers, sporting furry clogs, and a wallet on a stupid bloody great chain.
the closest they get to going over the water is the woolwich ferry.

I love them. Especially useful on units with low geared steering racks like the Iveco's and Stralis, or those with dustbin lid sized wheels (ERF/MAN). However a lot of my driving work is local shunting in tight yards so I may be biased somewhat...
I find that they need to be positioned 'just so' though, otherwise they get in your way.
