Just an observation but there may be some reason to this.

I am not a commercial driver but I have driven some small trucks (7.5t) for moving house etc. Back in 2005 I drove a DAF flatbed, 150 hp (?) and a straight 6 diesel that pulled well and sounded good. All the current trucks I see of the same size have these (to me) horrid 4 cylinder engines that sound horrible, don't seem to have any power (based on the MAN I drove recently) and always seem to be hard to start.

Must be to do with economy or price?

No its to do with economy , weight and emissions most of the current 7.5 tonners (post 2001) are more powerful and torquey than most of there six cylinder predicesors..

I drove my mates 5 year old daf, and compared to my 1995 merc 814 its a rocket ship upto the speed limiter, and will out accerlerate many a small car upto about 40... my 814 in comparison slowley ambles away ( not helped by the sleeper cab and 26ft box and tail lift... the daf will happily sit at 56 up and down hill, where as the merc will be down to 35-40 on a motorway climb and 80 down the other side and on the flat... ( alledgedly mlud)

I drive plenty of Daf and Ivecos on a daily basis and I can't say the 4 Cylinder Ivecos are any slower than the equivalent 6cyl Dafs (with approximately the same power)

Perhaps the MAN was out of Adblue? This can severely restrict performance

MANs are always out of ad blue!!!!! they use an EGR and catalist for emission compliance instead!!!! and not many people know the Iveco eurocargo tector and the Daf LF use the same Cummins ISB engine in 4 and 6 cylinder versions/ratings ........

For DAF applications, they are badged Paccar. I've seen this engine pop up in strange places. I assume its the default engine to use when a manufacturer does'nt have one of their own, just like Perkins back in the day (shudder)
