Its my motorcyle race transporter and was fine when I put her to sleep before the winter but this season it doesnt want to start. Air was getting into the fuel so I've cracked the injectors, aor did come out, still no start. The lift pump seemed to offer no resistance, put a new one on and that was the same, not pumping through (although both worked fine when off the engine and even as I was putting the new one on, diesel was pumping from it) I have hda to resort to easystart (less than a second of it) as I need it tomorrow. The batteries were fully charged so that shouldnt be it. Any ideas anyone?

Sounds like it's drawing air somewhere in the fuel lines

Yes, maybe worth checking the pipes for rodent dammage!! the lift pump may not work by hand if its on the cam!! try turning the engine by hand about half a turn loosen all the injetor pipes crank it then when fuel is realy spitting out tighten them and try starting it, I would avoid easy start the other thing is if the batterys arnt great and its only turning slowly it wont help if you can find another pair of batterys , or other truck to jump off and you can realy get it spinning over... good luck...

Thanks for the replies gents and a little update.
I needed it on the road last thursday so I gave it a 1/3 second burst of easystart as she wasnt playing the game with bleeding and she fired up ok. I drove the 2 miles or so and left it overnight. It started on the button the following morning and I drove it about 85miles to Donington and since then its started nice and crisply off the starter so I'm assuming there was a bit of air in there that has now been purged out. Happy again now. Now, who knows anything about Yoshimura ECUs as the bike was running liek a bag o shoite over the weekend..?

Cummins 6B engine by any chance?
My bus used to be a real pain at starting (churn it for 5 mins on the starter and eventually it would cough into life).

There were two problems. One was the injectors being worn out - replaceing them made it far easier to start. The second was a loose connection to the starter motor so it couldn't get as much power as it should. By the time we found that one, the arcing across the terminal had welded the nut to the stud. But the cable was still loose!

Mind you, it could just be a small leak letting air in over the winter.

Ex racer and BSB mechanic here - might be able to help...

Tell me about the Yoshi box - is it like a Power Commander that you can alter maps on, or what? And what makes you think it's the ECU?

What bike is it too and what engine / induction system / pipes / mods etc.?

Hi Ray, I knew it was the Yoshi box as I put a new seat unit on (that mounted differently) and put two bolts through the face of the ECU. It shorted out inside and is fecked apparently. Swapped to a Bazzaz ZFi/QS/TC unit now and will try out at Oulton in the next week or two. Bazzaz unit has two fuel maps, two quickshift maps and two traction control maps. Traction is a basic rate of acceleration one, not a full motec jobby. Bike is a 2010 GSXR 1000, stock motor, full Leo Vince system.

Who did you work with at BSB Ray? My truck is Simon Wright's old one.

Arrrggghhh, really? Bolts through an electronic box? No tea for you, and go stand in the corner biggrin

Ah well, at least you know what the problem is!

I did 5 years racing National supers with New Era from 1999 to 2004, with my team mate Michael O'Brien. I was also an instructor for a track day outfit for a while too.

When I quit riding, Mike carried on, and went over to firstly BSB superstocks, and then BSB itself as a privateer. He also quit a few years back, but I spannered for him for a few years.

Great fun, being part of the BSB circus. Got to know some of the top people you see on TV - some very well, some just to say 'Hi' to.

Chris Walker always friendly - I won a yearly perpetual trophy back in 1999 for 'Best Newcomer' which Chris had won a few years before. So his and my names are both engraved on the same trophy which is nice!

Pere Riba was a good paddock mate (although I'm sure it's cos he fancied my missus who did brollying, lol!) but it was nice to have someone of his calibre hanging round in our crappy awning at the back of the pits, helping us with some setup. We also got friendly with a couple of the mechanics at Crescent Suzuki too - who were also happy to come back to the 'cheap seats' occasionally and look at our ropey old GSXR for us!

Was also on speaking terms with John Reynolds, Gregorio Lavilla, Leon Haslam, Michael Rutter, and John Mc.Guinness (and it must be also noted that I kicked his ass at Go-Karting one evening too, lol)

I know Lee and Neil Morris of Chrysalis racing quite well - their Dad, Dave Morris, was a TT legend, until his early demise on the Manx frown I was also lucky enough to know Gavin Lee and Colin Gable too, until they also succumbed to the Isle of Man...

I helped Jamie Whitham shoot a Superbike video at Snetterton a while back - that was a laugh, he is a mentalist. At one point he took my bike out - I was sure it would end up in a million bits in a gravel trap!

Having had unprecedented access to the paddocks over the years has allowed me to briefly meet and get signatures from all kinds of legends too - I've been so lucky.

Rossi, Schwantz, Lawson, Mamola, to name a few big legends. Then all kinds of other interesting guys too - even people like Steve Parrish from commentating fame!

It ain't half wierd when you have an 'access all areas' pass for BSB, WSB or MOTO GP - you walk around, you see all the riders, teams and bikes - but it feels like you shouldn't really be there - almost like you're watching a 'live' version of your TV at home, lol!

Anyway. I've rambled and digressed enough! Heh.

Unfortunately Ray, although a couple of years ago I was good enough for the national superstocks, these days the budget is only good enough for 2nd hand tyres (i kid you not! it's 2nd hand or no racing at all) so no illustrious names to drop here.
Did you ever bump into Kurt Langan I think he was around in those days. He used to do a bit with us when he came back to racing a few years ago and he dropped a few names, schwantz/witham/haslam snr. We didnt pay too much attention thining it was paddock embellishment but there are clips in you tube of him on the transatlantic series and he got a mention or two in withams book. SOme funny stories though, mad as a box of frogs.

Incidentally, the truck seems to be sorted, it had been laid up for 5 weeks between uses and she started on the button and not missed a beat. Result!

IIRC Kurt was an ex-miner from S. Yorks, I recall him doing well in the Pro-Am series in the early 80's. I was racing at that time although on a/cooled Yams with little success but enjoyed it!

yeah thats the dude. Nice fella, i could listen to him for hours, tough as a really tough thing and still pretty handy when he came back but a couple of hefty tumbles made him realise a 50 odd year old body doesnt bounce as well as a 20 yr old one
