I was chatting with some other drivers local to myself a few weeks ago and it still surprises me the amount of us that get a poor hourly rate and no proper time and half or double time.

We are on £9 proper time and half after 40hours mon-sat and double time on Sundays

Two of the drivers I was chatting to we're on £8, £10 after 40 hrs mon sat and £12 on a Sunday.

Curious as to what the average rates of pay are across the country

I'm in NE Scotland and do mostly oil related work

i get the same as you when i do general haulage, (fair bit more when i do the other stuff.)
but what we get, would be considered good i think in todays world. and we are supposedly classed as proffesionals.

I get £425 a week, no o/t but i don't do o/t hours either, if i'm over 40 i get time back. Usually never go over 40 hrs anyway. Seems ok till you consider an 18 year old stacking shelves in Asda isn't far behind and i've been driving for 25 years.

We don't... Flat rate all the way through @12.16hr. Extra 1.56hr between 6pm/6am.

Salaried on that wage based on 47.5hrs a week... Never do that though, normally work between 40-45 but they never take money off us.

The way my rota falls leaves me 16 days short a year based on a 5 day week. So get paid for them extra days off too.

Could be worse!

Yeh, i would have thought haulage drivers would be on more than that! :/

I work as an electrical fitter in a southwesterly dockyard.

my basic is £11.60 for a 37 hour week. Every quarter of an hour worked over is then paid as overtime, at an hourly rate of x1.42.

If you do shift work, you get +36% on your basic wage for a back shift(3.30pm-11.30pm), for a 'day shift' you get an extra +12% on your basic wage. (not sure what nights is, think its +45%).

My wage isn't bad considering my age (21), but i don't think i could live comfortably with a family in years to come on that.

This works out as a basic of just over 30k... Add to that unsociable hours, fuel bonus etc etc and it's around 33. Not bad for what is very easy work. All new kit, never run bent, short days, no nights out.

It was many years ago I was talking to a chap who drove HGVs for Royal Mail, so it's possible my memory fails, or he was lying, but he said he was on triple time on a Bank holiday? Plus a bonus if he was supposed to be off, but was called in?

I don't know about time and a half but, as far as I'm concerned my wage is better than most. I work nights and gross around £34,500 P.A for 48 hours a week, no sleeping in the cab and I know what time I'm gong to finish within 10 mins.

When i worked for BT back in th90's the o/t rates were after the normal 37hr week

up to six hours time and a quarter
next six time and a half
after that double time

During the problems overseas in the early 90's we did two weeks 06.00-18.00 one Sunday off. Bit miffed that the normal rate for sunday was straight double time ,but the buggers didnt double to o/t!!( yes i know gredy buggers) mind you for that 14 days worked 132 hrs was paid for the equivalent of 222hrs pay inc basic!!. Mind you we were shagged after it. The tax was horrendous

I sometimes use it if it suits me!

We're paid right through either way.. paid breaks etc! Royal Mail must do too.

Sounds a similar crack to me, the Stourton depot is only round the corner. May be worth a sniff about at some point!

We are on £10/hr, any overtime is £10/hr too. Get £20/week for clocking in on time, £250 christmas bonus and £250/year bonus if not damaged the truck.
I don't work weekends but do between 50 and 60 hrs/week on average which is more than enough work for me.
Curtain sider but mostly bay tipping and quite a lot of local work which entails sitting around for 3 or 4 hrs just waiting for my delivery time.

Get paid just over £30k/year but want more for less hours so may go looking at heavy haulage sometime soon.
Based in Leicester if that makes a difference.
I've heard of a lot of people being on £7/hr and even less.

Himself is on just over minimum wage (yea I know, but it was the only company that would take him on as soon as he got his licences), he gets that for the first 50 hours a week, anything over 50 is paid at around 1 1/3 (I think), £20 each night out, around £20 a week bonus (have to do 5 days to get that), and double bubble for bank holidays.

Owner is also one of those that likes having an excuse to try and take money out of the wages, (damages, recovery bills etc when down to 'driver error')

Not been paid an hourly rate for years.

Everything is flat rate these days inc my work place.

Shunting atm doing 10.30 hour night shifts after 1hr break, midlands based.
Somewhere around £575-600 p/w (not sure of exact amount lol )
No extra for Sundays or Bank holidays, all at flat rate still.
Overtime is a sixth shift and pays around £240 for a 12 hour shift and less for shifts less than 12 hours.
I don't bother with sixth shifts so don't pay attention.Although it's a definate on £240 for 12 on o/t.

Our basic is £7ish, everything is bonus. Meal allowance, travel, damage, extra rate for being based inside M25.. the list goes on. 50hrs basic contract, work average 65hrs a week in 5 days. This means if we go on holiday, sick ect we end up potless rolleyes

Used to get £175 for a Saturday, regardless of the fact most jobs only took a few hours. They put a stop to that and started paying an hourly rate so now no employees will do it. They would rather take a punt at £15 a hour for agency, give tham the work of 3 drivers and hope that they get it all done , which they never do. hehe
