How long before we see DSG gearboxes in trucks?
Discussion
My daily drivers are newish Volvos with iShift.. They're a mix of 10L 450's and 13L 460's.
As good as the iShift is, best 'box I've used tbh. Changing up gear uphill causes a huge loss of momentum and it really had to dig deep to pull the next gear.
Same as changing down from top to 11/10...
Can't help but think that using DSG systems would have huge increases in MPG. Which is pretty much the biggest selling point of a fleet truck these days.
Wonder if they're currently in development? Surely only have to be a matter of time?

i think your right.
and i'd agree, so far the i-shift in the volvo is the best auto box i've driven. in fact, the volvo is my fave full stop for driving. they just need to sort the bloody cab, needs to be more daf super space cab.
i know the all new volvo is still under test, be good to see the finished item.

Have you had the P button and kickdown disabled?
Before ours got disabled p button pressed and kickdown at the base of a hill and fly up in all the right gears.
Now its a case of select manual for hills as in auto with the above disabled it kills the truck.
Why does ' The Garage ' feel the need to disable stuff like this though? 'They' decided to disable all sorts of stuff on our ste DAF 430's. Bear in mind we run 44t on every load. This lead to engines/ turbos/ gearboxes packing up on sub 70k km units. Before ours got disabled p button pressed and kickdown at the base of a hill and fly up in all the right gears.
Now its a case of select manual for hills as in auto with the above disabled it kills the truck.
These decisions always seem to be made by those farthest removed from the actual transport side of the firm.

The Manager asked the thrashmaster drivers to sort the fuel out or he would sort it out.
The thrashmasters laughed and said he would never turn the trucks down and start having stuff disabled.
They aren't laughing anymore,we have been at 85k and running with kickdown and P buttons disabled for the last 5 years.
Trucks seem to lag behind in technology, but if they prove to be more efficient id reckon 5 years or so and youll see them( if they can handle the power and torque in a wagon) Wasnt long ago manuals were the norm on a new wagon, most are an option now with auto as standard
And gotta agree, Volvo is the best auto, I can deffo say its waaaay better than MAN ( tho was assured by the salesman that the MAN box was on par with the I Shift. ste

I'm not sure they are more efficient - you effectively need two complete gearboxes for the system to work, so they are physically larger and heavier than the alternative constant mesh (like I-shift or PowerShift) gearbox. Bear in mind that most '12-speed' gearboxes are actually only 3 or 4 speed boxes, with additional gears on the front and back to multiply up the ratios:
Engine:Clutch:2speedx3speedx2speed:Propshaft
The latest 'boxes are so quick to shift that the loss of momentum is much much less noticeable, and they will only get faster with time.
There is one truck that has a DSG box - the new Fuso Canter has a 6 speed box with dual clutches.
