Several times a year I see smallish lorry driving around Manchester city centre with a load of weigths bolted directly to the chassis. Its usually on trade plates anyone any ideas what it's doing. This has been happening for several years now.

My guess would be the local authority checking public weighbridges.

If the weights are bolted directly to the chassis, it could possibly be a prototype from one of the local commercial vehicle manufacturers - there are a variety of test routes to test the vehicles behaviour in different situations.

Doubtfull , the weighbridge testers use loose weights and a fork lift for putting exact cailbrated weights on them..

Does Google images throw up an image to give us an idea of the truck you've seen?
