7.5t race truck/toy town trucker!
Discussion
Hi everyone, so while I'm not a real trucker I've recently bought an Iveco 75e 17 which I'm going to use to transport my old racing car around in..
I've got a couple of questions which I've searched a bit but not really got any definitive answers so thought maybe someone on here might be able to help.
1) As its private use only I don't need to use the tacho, but as for MOTs is it the same as a normal test for a 7.5 tonner or did I read somewhere that it can go through a different type of test specifically for non-commercial usage
2) The speed limiter! Any way round it? I've tried pulling a couple of fuses but that just made it worse and limited the revs to 1500rpm in all gears.. PM's gratefully received!
3)Anyone know anything about birds (the feathered variety!) Its been parked a while and I've noticed a birds nest on the engine, couldn't see if there was anyone home but I wonder what type of bird would nest in an engine bay, and how long the nest might be occupied?!
Thanks for any info, and if I've spelt anything wrong, well, meh!

Normal two axle hgv test , speedlimiter mandatory on 7.5 ton reg after oct2001 !! you can sign a tacograph exemption form when you have the test (plateing) but this is only for private use if it have sponsor stickers you will get a pull from vosa as this is classed as hire or reward , what ever else you do be carefull you are in a differnt world over 3.5 ton there are a lot more rules and breaking them isnt a good idea ...
we have a vosa place just down the road, and i wS advised that sponsor stickers were fine!!!
have a look doen the paddock at bbt or toca and see how many orange or green disks you see. !!!!
I actualy keep a driver log, note down every tme i do a visual safety check. and faults And recfifications, plus run the tacho even though as its private use i do t need to. shows a profferssional approach that should keep vos hAppy.
the real problem is even vosa dont know mostof the rules and plod has no clue..

Im far from sure about this. Tested with an example: the car carries mandatory decals for the series sponsor, could VOSA use this as a reason to prosecute. The answer has to be of course not.Ive heard similar myself, allegedly from VOSA, but the only way to put this to bed and for the OP to be sure, is to write to VOSA asking the question clearly.
I suspect that the answer will be no, of course not!

They (VOSA) are getting more clued up as they have to show results!! have a look doen the paddock at bbt or toca and see how many orange or green disks you see. !!!!

If they think you are a pro driver or pro race team in it for money and being paid they will warn then take action against people or companys that are running trucks over 3.5 without an O license!!! we are near oulton park and vosa are around this area stopping race trucks... if you have sponsored by brand X this is a red flag to them having the make of car oil tyres etc seems to be a little bit of a grey area .....

vosa wont give a written answer, or if they do like the tax man it will say this advice canno,t be relied on.the problem is its the court pn vosa that make the ultimate decision.
having said that one of the other guys did get stopped and they wanted to procecute, but following a paper trail they dropped it.

2 - The tacho and speed limiter are sealed I think so any tampering with those will cost you
No driver cpc required
If it's an old manual pump it's normally pretty straight forward to disconnect the limiter at the pump. Or you could adjust the DIL switches in the Tacho head but your speedo would read incorrectly. VOSA will have your pants down if they catch you though!

I used to drive a variety of 75 E 15s in the late 90's and thankfully none had limiters and all would go off the end of the speedo if unladen / downhill... they were decent little trucks as I recall, and though I only had day cabs I could still sleep in one quite happily stretching out over the seats.
As mentioned, they're a little juicy at full pelt, but I surprised many a slow coach on the fosse way in mine!
As mentioned above, don't screw with the tacho... I was forced to by my then boss and was very very lucky not to get caught, he wasn't so lucky, lost the operating license and bang went the company....
I suspect I would have probably been jailed, certainly banned for a long time, but I was young and desperate so stuck my head in the sand.

cough my m reg merc 814 has a fully functioning and calibrated tacho... i had to place it as it failed totally so no speedomand i need the tacho for france..
now its not the quickest truck off the line, or on the slightst uphill gradient (walking pacemon the run into spa!!)
but on the flat or down hill it will hit 80, that might be one tacho disk that i dont keep in the truck !!!!
although i dont need to use the tacho in the uk, i do put one in every time and also keep a maint check, service and driver hours log in the cab.
