WHAT DO THESE THINGS DO?

Hi. Just bought an Iveco 75e17 2002.

There's a button on the cab floor just near the pedals. What is it?

There's a 3 position switch with various symbols the most notable being what looks like a foot hovering over a pedal. At the bottom is the circle with two lines around, like brAke pads. In between is a circle with a little arrow onthe circle and 1 l e line a brake pad.

What's that?

The button on the floor is probably an exhaust brake. Don't know about the other stuff.

The button in the dash will select how the exhaust brake works. One position will be off, one will be so that it only activates if you press the button on the floor, one will be so that it comes in when you lift off the throttle.

Thanks for that, makes sense. Just need to figure out which position does which.

Are the exhaust brakes effective? What is best way to use, does it save wear and tear of brakes, improve fuel or what?

Sory for ignorance, fairly new to this.

They do help a bit with engine braking, but it won't hold you back on a long hill. I always found it best to run with the switch in the 'off throttle' position. Then it's just there without having to push another button on the floor.

Are they effective?

It depends on the manufacturer - some exhaust brakes will make alter the exhaust note and do little else (DAF CF340, Volvo FL6), others will slow you down a good deal (Atego 2628) and some will lift you out of your seat if you forget that theyre engaged and youre unladen (Volvo FM12).

Buttons on the floor usually fall inot the first group. A good exhaust brake will hold back a fully laden vehicle on a very steep hill, in the correct gear, without your having to apply the service brake.

My Kenworth truck I had in Oz had an exhaust brake and it sounded awesome!
I never really needed it but kept using it.

I tell you what sounded better - the air starter. It was an ex petroleum truck so had air instead of electric starter. Imagine an air gun wrench, like they use in garages, and amplify the noise by 400%! It was fking loud.

Ahh, that noise brings back memories.
It was late 90's so I'm not sure if they even use them anymore.

The best fun was pulling up in a town and starting it when a load of school kids were walking past. "WEEHHHAAAA!"

Oh yes, I remember jumping in a FH to shunt a trailer, fired it up and took off down the yard foot to the floor, being auto it shifted up without letting off, came to the end of the yard where the trailer was and let my foot off the throttle. Hadn't noticed someone had left the exhauster fully on.
Who needs brakes?
Had a couple of Ivecos, the button on the floor is more decor than function sadly
