As promised, took my camera to work today and took some shots of the interior of the DAF.

I'll try and explain what all the switches do as best I can, feel free to correct me if necessary.

Right, general interior:

Big round twirly thing that lets you change direction:

The most annoying invention known to mankind:

(Spot the spelling mistake - I am yet to find the "Engine Oil Lever".)

Switches:

(L to R: Interior light, central locking, night heater, reverse beeper, this switch left intentionally blank, night light.)

(Left: Ride-height levelling. Right: Hill-start assist (in reality, just a button with a red light on it that seems to make no difference whatsoever.)

(Far Right: Traction Control, this switch left intentionally blank, hazard warning lights of invincibility.)

("Traction Assist", diff lock (?), gear selector, air con.)

(Exhaust brake and manual over-ride.)

(Speed limiter and cruise control.)

The best bit about the DAF is the sun visor. It's basically a 7 foot roller blind:

The DAF sunblinds let in light by the A-pillar though.

It's for the vehicle check sheets. Not my choice of colour.

No, taken whilst stationary in the yard this morning.

Honest. wink

Imagine taking photos of all the "everyday" switches in an IVECO. You'd need a fish-eye lense.

And none of them would actually work.

I know CW7 has answered but if he was on the M62 the tacho wouldn't have "driving without

card" displayed tongue out

Unless I was driving without card.

(I wasn't.)

So is that little rotary knob the sum total of selecting gears in a modern cab? I've always had visions of a huge gear selector with a splitter button (?!?) to give dozens of forward and reverse options.

Yep, that's pretty much it. Forward or reverse. Or slow forward or slow reverse. Or neutral.

It's good to see DAF have got rid of that damn turquoise blue seat fabric!

Is the phone on the dash just a phone or is it linked to another TMS system?

Barry won't know, it doesn't do much on a DAF.

Basically it makes the engine braking much stronger, so you can use the exhaust brake rather than wear out your boss's precious brake linings on a long, gentle hill.

The only thing it's good for on the DAFs is that it makes the gearbox drop a gear.

It does a quieter job than an engine brake - turns the engine into a compressor and augments braking (as stated above)

The Jake brake was a common engine brake but is stupidly noise and their use is restricted in some places

The rotary knob is a drive mode switch, annoyingly the MAN version is a mirror image of the DAF one (my days and nights are spent fixing them). The Daf Engine Brake (DEB) also encourages the engine to use lots more lovely low saps engine oil. The motor in your XF is built by Cummins, a division of Paccar who own DAF and Peterbilt. More trouble is expected when this engine has to reach euro 6 emissions. Car drivers ever heard of ad blue?

Mine has a 16 speed box, thats a 4 speed range change with a splitter, auto boxes are considered 'dark magic ' in small family firms.

Im surprised that a road vehicle has a diff lock. Im used to one next to it that cross locks - tying together the forward and rear driven axles.

Thisll sound naive, but you just turn the glorified headlamp switch, put your hands on the wheel, take your foot off the brake, accelerate and then steer? No range changes or drop gears - sounds easy...
