Hi really struggling with this, any advice gratefully received.

Symptom:
Tailgate consistently remains slightly proud (not fully flush), as if the final cinch/pull-in stage never occurs.
Car thinks booting open, warning when driving off.
It is locked.

Lower tailgate latches and locks normally (first catch and full lock both work). The tailgate will not perform the final soft-close pull-in to sit flush.

What works:

  • Lower tailgate closes and clicks into latch correctly
  • Tailgate is fully locked and requires release button to open
  • HKL appears to trigger soft-close (measured ~12V output for ~1.5 seconds)
  • No fault codes stored
  • Battery fully charged / on conditioner
Parts replaced:

  • Lower tailgate soft-close actuator (new OEM)
  • Upper latch (new oen)
  • Lower tailgate control module (after market)
Note on year passed I replaced the struts as the boot had a different issue. This is now a new issue.

Checks already done:

  • Striker alignment adjusted in multiple positions
  • Wiring checked and continuity tested (no faults found)
  • Lubrication applied to latch/striker
  • Slow-close test (stopping at first latch) produces no pull-in
  • Direct observation shows no visible cinch movement
  • System consistently energises but does not complete final closure
This model has no calibration options in drive
This model has not calibration options with BMW software or other 3rd party tools. You can reset the module in the fuse box area (and no there is no water ingress), clear faults, test open, test close.

I know you said you've tried this, but is that the two bolts on the latch unit in the lower tailgate? e.g. the bolts in this pic

I had the same issue (failure to engage final soft closure) and loosening these bolts to pull the latch backwards (towards the rear of the car) fixed it.
