Jag XE S noises
Discussion
Hi all,
As Princess Leia once said, "Help meObi-Wan Kenobi Pistonheads, you're my only hope"
My '16 XE has a couple of annoying noises I can't get to the bottom of:
-around 55-70mph, there is an intermittent bearing-like hum / sound. It progressively goes on and off over a cycle a couple of seconds long. I feel there may be a very slight vibration in the steering wheel that accompanies it. Not engine-speed dependent.
-around 90-95mph, there's a high-pitched whine coming from the rear. Disappears as soon as I lift off, and reappears as soon as I accelerate again (and no, it's not a police car's siren
). Also not engine-speed dependent.
A rear-right bearing replacement didn't change either of these noises. And switching to winter wheels didn't do anything either. Garage says they can't see anything obvious and need further testing.
Any clues ?
Cheers

First noise at 55-70mph sounds like tyre flatspotting or a wheel bearing starting to go but not completely gone yet. Vibration in wheel points to front.
Second noise at 90-95mph under load only is classic rear diff whine. Pinion bearing or gear mesh pattern. Lift off kills the load, noise stops. Check diff oil level and condition.
