My tailgate on my ford focus mk1 2002 hatchback will not open via the button inside the car. I know the button is working and I have even crossed the two wires together going to the button but still nothing happens.

I have pulled back the rubber sleeve where the boot opens near the hinges to see if any wires are broken but they look fine. I can open the boot with the key fob fine absolutely it's just annoying I can't use the dam interior button.

Any ideas anyone?

Have you checked the fuse? If that doesn't fix it, scan the car for faults and it may guide you better.

Haven't checked the fuses simply because it does indeed open via the key fob. I can't imagine there being a fuse just for the interior button?

How do you know the button works?

Also, is there a third way to open the boot, by using the exterior handle, on a Mk1 Focus?

I removed the button and tested it and no there isn’t a handle as such to open the boot.

If the switch works and the tailgate opens by other electrical/electronic means (for example, the remote) this it must be a wiring issue. To solve this, you'll need the wiring diagram then use the diagram to come up with some logical tests you can do with a multimeter. It could be a broken wire in the door jam, or something else.

I had this problem. I never tested the wires at the switch. I popped cap of the switch and it worked pressing the round rubber part under it.

I guess that's a good start with a wiring diagram, I'll see if I can look one up thanks.
