Clarke strongarm engine crane issue

I have borrowed a crane from a neighbour while he is overseas and am concerned about its operation. When operating the release valve the jib does not sink smoothly like I would expect, I have to persuade it with a knock and it then comes down pretty rapid and jerky.. not ideal when I will eventually have my engine on the end.

I have checked and topped up the fluid level with the correct stuff and also tried bleeding. I notice air escapes when removing the filler bung after use, is this normal?

The crane itself has had very little use , I think twice in around 15 years.

Anyone have any advice?

Have you tried it with some weight on?

Try it with a bit of weight on and see if that helps?

As above, normal for an unloaded hydraulic lift as there isn't enough weight to overcome the stiction in the ram.

If you haven't already then a drop of oil on the joints and pins wouldn't go amiss if it's sat idle. Also a quick smear of hydraulic oil on the piston rod to help stop the ram seal from sticking
