Stethoscope for finding noises

Anyone had any experiences with an electronic noise finder / car stethoscope?

Basically hook up the crocodile clips to various parts of the suspension, go for a drive and listen in the headphones if the noise is getting closer..

I've had an ongoing suspension knock, have had 2 specialists look at it / replaced many items to no avail.
