Mk8 Fiesta ST rattle - help!
Discussion
Hi everyone,
I have a mk8 Fiesta ST that has a really annoying rattle that sounds as though it's coming from the rear of the inside of the car.
I've searched everywhere to try and find out where it's coming from but can't find it to be able to fix it.
It starts up when the car is up to temperature and then does it over smooth and rough roads.
I've had it looked at by a Ford dealership who, as predicted, couldn't find it, but still charged £200 for looking into it. They wrapped the metal bits where the seats clip into in tape and did the same with the boot catch which has made no difference.
I've had the back seats down, the parcel shelf out, the boot floor out. I've even wrapped the B&O subwoofer in an old duvet cover to try and cushion it in case that was the cause but that hasn't helped. I've also checked the boot stops but they all seem fine. I've also driven with all the seatbelts plugged in.
I've taken the rear seat out and taped up everything underneath as well.
If I was to try and describe the rattle, it sounds like plastic rattling against something, making me think it's trim related, so I'm not sure why it only starts rattling when the car is up to temperature.
Yesterday when looking again, I thought the rattle was coming from the trim inside the tailgate itself. I tried to remove the trim but couldn't get the top part out.
I know this is a long shot but has anybody else had anything similar and could you suggest anything?
Thanks for reading.

Not exactly similar, but I once had a Focus ST that had a really annoying rattle from the rear and I eventually, after removing LOADS of trim and asking my wife to sit in the back seat as I drove it around, found out it was a screw/fixing for the upper tailgate spoiler.
Managed to pull the trim covering the fixings out (it required a bit of force on the Focus but it did come away eventually) and managed to fish out the fixing, screw it back in and rattle was gone.

A few easy suggestions.
Rear number plate , very flexible ,they flap about .
Rear bumper , underneath there are two (possibly three) plastic lock nuts - they stick out on brackets . They are never tight enough and not even very secure allowing the bumper to rattle .
The above can both be fixed with velcro/blue tac / a bit of rubber . The bumper can be done without jacking up , just sticking your head underneath (unless you are a human bobblehead) .
The light in the boot , you can't pull much out without major dissasembly but it's worth wrapping the first section of wire in cloth tape etc.
I did the above and most obvious rattles stopped , if they come back there is one more suspect.........
The high level brake light on the top of the hatch . Definitely a rattle if you tap it but i am not sure how it comes off or if the sound travels into the car . I think you have to take the trim off from the inside .

I have asked the wife to sit in the back while I drive. Typically it didn't make a sound. Commuting the next day though, it was rattle central!

My advise is to turn the music up; my baguette rattles all over the place, but with some loud music I can't hear any of them!

Hey thanks for getting back to me. Rear number plate , very flexible ,they flap about .

I've tried to find out how to remove the rear trim in the boot but couldn't find how to do it.
I did manage to remove a bit of the rear tailgate trim but got so far and couldo the rest so put it back together.
Weirdly, I did find a bulb in the bottom of the boot a few weeks ago but the light inside the boot is still working so didn't think it was the boot interior light. I do think the connection is lose, though, as it sometimes flickers and you have to sort of press on it to get it to stay on.

perhaps what she sat on was making the rattle?

Yeah, I did think that. I removed the rear bench seat and taped down everything which didn't make a difference. I even rattled the seat by hand whilst it was out in case it was something in the seat. I have resorted to just turning up the music but just knowing it's there ruins the car for me.
Thinking about getting something else in a few months. Won't be another hot hatch as can't afford anything exciting. But am thinking along the lines of A3, CLA or Seat Leon.

The temperature thing; could it be something do with the valved exhaust, or are there heater vents in the rear? Good luck, mystery rattles are the worst
I did read about the exhaust valve rattle and thought it could be that. However, I've watched a few videos of that on the owners FB groups and my rattle sounds different. I wouldn't even know how to test it tbh as it does it whether it's in normal or sport.
