Someone I know (proper bodger and tight as anything) had a big emergency stop button with a sponge taped to it on the roof of his shed.
I asked why it was there and he showed me. It stopped the lift when his old defender hit it.
Simple, cheap and effective. The other option is a doorbell. An old fashioned one with a pokey-out button, glue something larger to the button? I asked why it was there and he showed me. It stopped the lift when his old defender hit it.
A big plastic hockey puck sized thing, my kids have a plastic hickey okay set which the ‘puck’ would work.
If you want to do it properly I would be looking for already made optical ‘break beam’ sensor based alarm like these: https://www.easylinkuk.co.uk/product-photoelectric...
This assumes you could permanently mount the sensor/receiver at a safe distance from the roof, so when any vehicle on the lift breaks the beam the alarm with sound.

Various limit switches are available that will do what you suggest in different ways. Something like the below.
