Hi,

Can anyone recommend either a paid/subscription or youtube general car diy series?

I've been using YouTube successfully to do some odd, car specific jobs (throttle bodies, maf sensors, obd warnings, new brake discs and pads) but I'm keen to build up my overall spannering knowledge.

30 years ago I could happily rebuild a MGB engine, top and bottom end, fix contacts in a distributor cap, new starter motors etc. But I think technology has moved on and I need to reset my knowledge base!

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Cheers

I am not sure the basics are that different from an MGB. Brakes for instance pretty much follow the same mechanical structure, as do the likes of starter motors and alternators. The only difference with modern cars is you cant get at these components without spending all day removing everything near it first.

Engine diagnostics can be easy, or a black art depending on the fault. A cheap ELM327 type dongle and a mobile phone app will get you through most trouble codes, working out what they mean can be a whole different story though. Anything else can mean struggling to find a solution to read the codes, although not impossible with cheap readers, it can be a lot more involved.

If you could rebuild an MGB engine then a modern engine will only involve a lot more parts and a far bigger instruction manual. It still works on the same principles.

The only good thing is most modern cars don't need a lot of fixing like an MGB would have.

My advice is when a problem needs sorting then look on youtube for the answer, or just do a search for a particular type of car and loads of info will help you learn how to fix stuff.

Apologies I probably didn't explain properly in the original post. I'm retiring in the next couple of years and part of my retirement "hobby" is going to be getting a bit more hands on with my cars, classics and future projects such as possibly a new Caterham kit build.

I'm going to sign up for hands on car mechanic courses (especially auto electronics) but before that I wanted to do some generic online courses to help build up knowledge prior to in person courses.

I can just keep searching on YouTube but I wondered if any PH'ers had done anything more formal online.

Thanks
