Hi all! I’ve recently got hold of an 84 Honda ATC 70 which has been sitting in a container for 20 years. Over the coming months I want to get it running, have some fun with it and try to preserve this awesome machine!

It has a jincheng 50cc engine in it which I plan to swap out when I find an original motor but I’d love to get it running in the mean time and that’s where I need help as I’m no mechanic but I’d love to learn!

I’ve put a couple of hours work in and now have spark. I have cleaned the carb out and I’ve attached it to an auxiliary tank to ensure clean fuel whilst I work on the original tank.

It runs for 10 seconds or less with the help of break cleaner then dies! It’s unresponsive to any throttle changes after it fires.

Any ideas? What can I do next? It feels like a fuelling issue. Do I try cleaning the carb more, replace it or can I test it at all? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Carb will almost certainly be gummed up solid after 20 years stood.

You would need to completely dismantle it to assess whether it`s saveable, even if it is you`d need a rebuild kit from somewhere.

I`d be more inclined to look into finding a cheap new carb on Amazon/Ebay.

Something like this might do it:

Agree with the pensions comment. I fitted a new carbon to my Honda mower earlier this year. Cost under £20 and now the mower runs better than I ever remember it doing.
