Has anyone on here DIY rebuilt an auto tansmission?
Discussion
So let me say first things first i dont have a shagged out auto box in need of a rebuild my current car is a 6 speed getrag manual, Its just i love old bangers and i enjoy trying to do pretty much all of the work myself..
Anyone on here done one themselves? Am i right in thinking it would be easier to do something like an old gm 4 speed than a ZF or something?
Obviously i wouldnt have a cat in hells chance of fixing a modern 8 speed or whatever but i only like the old uns anyway!
Cheers!

ZF boxes as used in the Range Rover Classic & Disco & the later P38 aren't difficult.
Absolute cleanliness is an essential as the fine dust that accumulates inside them as the friction material in the various clutches wears builds up & if you disturb it - which can include a fluid & filter change - can cause problems.
A good exploded diagram is also a must, the Land Rover factory manuals for the above go into full details.
When I did some work on the ZF4HP22 on my own RRC these were very good for parts & the diagrams:

These might be of interest (if you intend to use the dishwasher best to wait until the other half is out for the day):

ETA For anyone thinking of doing those ZF boxes note in the cowdery link the pic titled 'The pump'.
You'll see two lugs in the centre hole of the pump.
These locate in two cutouts in the gearbox side of the torque converter.
The TC MUST be refitted to the gearbox and seated to the correct depth before putting the box back on the engine.
If you don't people have used the bolts to pull the engine & gearbox together & this will break the pump.
Not unusual & is one of the FAQs on Ashcroft Transmissions website.
No pump = no drive & you get to take it all apart again.

Yes, done an array over the years, started on the gm180 in an auto manta and moved up to a 4l60e in my chevy van after that only allowed 2nd.
Ive currently got a th350 out of my camaro in bits on the bench and another th350 on the floor as a parts bin, oh and another 4l60e for me to nick bits from to upgrade the th350 for the camaro.
I know what I'm doing but YouTube has been a real bonus, if I need to cross check stuff there are a few guys who will have videos of what I'm doing.
