I have a Seat Arona which has the steering column adjustment lever to the side of the steering coumn. Annoyingly it is positioned right where my knee bangs it when I let the clutch out. Ideally I would like to move the lever itself upwards, and being a simple plastic component I wondered about pointing a hairdryer at it for a while and then (gently) bending it upwards.

Has anyone tried doing something like this? I appreciate that there is a risk of snapping or damaging the part, does that make my car instantly unsafe?

Try moving your seat back an inch or down a bit.

It sounds to me like you are sitting too close to the steering wheel. Which is ironic as it appears the steering wheel has the full range of adjustment

The problem is I have rather short legs. I can avoid the issue by moving the seat down as you say, but the driving position would be more comfortable and it would be easier to see over the dash if I could avoid that.

Can you remove the lever by unscrewing it?

Probably, it feels like it's held by a single screw (probably torx) but it's rather covered by the trim so might be quite a fiddle. I'll give it a go!
