Purchased oil to use to service a vehicle, they sent a different brand to what I ordered but it was the same rating of oil, 5w40 MP, my question is what does the MP stand for? Thanks

I don't think MP is an official oil spec, I'd guess it just means multi purpose.

That would be my guess too. I don't recognise it as part of a spec, and I guess it's just something the marketing people threw in there to make it look more betterer.
The manual/handbook should specify what oil to use, either a generic API/ACEA grade or one of the obscure manufacturer grades like VW 501 01 that is probably just an API/ACEA grade plus monkey gland extract added or some such.
