Hello, can someone kind person advise?

2011 1.4 8v Evo.

New battery this week

Occasionally when starting shows battery light and has heavy steering. If you switch off and restart it resets itself and is fine. No other current issues.

What's wrong?

Am I right thinking earth straps? And if so where are they located?
Thanks

What's the spec of the battery you've had fitted?

A quick look at Tayna suggests it should be a type 027 EFB.

The EFB bit is important as if you've only got a standard one then that could be the cause of your problems.

Presumably you've connected a code reader, as a warning light (battery light) was displayed. What codes were shown?

Maybe the new battery is just duff. Do you still have the old one you could put back in?

Or if you have a volt meter, try measuring the voltage across the terminals when the engine is stopped and when it is running. If should be higher when the engine is running.

The PAS has its own ECU on the steering column that goes faulty (or did on earlier years)

It may be this that's the issue

Similar issues with a Polo recently. It was a bad earth. I cleaned up all earths and those metal strip fuses and it has been fine since. Check the clamps on the terminals are tight too.

Alternator test 15.6v running
Plus lights radio heater wipers 13.6v, so guessing that's all good

15.6v is high isn’t it? Should be 14.5v max and may be your issue.

I'd it's 15.6v definitely
The op needs to stop driving the car asap as that voltage will quickly destroy the new battery

Cleaned some earth straps and got it to 15.1v running, still looking like a goosed alternator
