Of course there are different jacking points. Use the jack point for changing a wheel.

And it obviously won't lower if you have axle stands holding it up.

You have to be trolling.

I have used the jack countless times and it would always lower itself when I turned the valve counter clockwise, today it just got stuck there.

I do not like jacking up on the sills because it damages the jack point attached to the car, it works best when I put stands there, not a jack.

You were trying to lower it under load, or lower it away from the car which was supported by something else?

If it won't lower under load there's something wrong with the jack or the way you're using it, and you shouldn't use it again until you understand what that was.

Most jacks will lower themselves when unloaded - if yours usually will but has stopped doing it, that might be a sign of a problem with the seal.

Yeah as I said I have used it many many times since 2022 and have a fair bit of experience with mechanics and it was definitely malfunctioning as it had worked fine until today.

Played it safe and have binned it, got a Halfords advanced one instead which is way more robust and sturdy. Got it for a good price too with my trade card. I It is huge and heavy but well worth it in my opinion, three year guarantee too..

You need a puck shaped to the cill between the jack and the car

The ones without the need to disconnect the handle and turn a separate valve are much better, much more convenient.

Was the old one perhaps at the top of it's travel and the piston had perhaps just caught in an area where there hasn't been much use? Or had it been in position for a long time and perhaps the seal stuck? Strange that the load wouldn't overcome it, though, I've never seen that issue and pretty much all my trolley jacks are second hand.
