Electronic Brake failure
Discussion
Hello,
Just wondering if anyone can offer some advice please?
My wife went to start the car this morning and there was a loud screeching noise, then a yellow symbol lit up with a message saying parking brake failure, the car won't drive and feels as if it's stuck in parking brake mode.
Garage can't look at it until Tuesday and would be charging us to come and collect it so just thought I'd ask here to see if there's anything I could possibly do before then, I'm suspicious that it's something to do with battery power because recently there has been messages appearing saying increased battery discharge, also for some reason the lights switch themselves on to full beam, it's a dial to the right of the steering wheel and quite often we will notice it has turned clockwise to full beam and it's definitely not us turning it.
Thanks

Sounds like either the motor that actuates the handbrake has failed or the cables have seized. I believe there is an emergency release, but its also not unknown that you need to cut the cables to get the brakes to release.

Remove trim in boot on near side you see a metal ball type thing.
In the tool kit for car is a plastic T shaped thing I believe it’s red.
one end fits over the ball and pull upwards like your life depends on it the handbrake will release. Drive to garage save recovery fees.
Make sure cars in park so doesn’t roll away.
The square end on the t handle is to release the gear box out of park when and if it does a poo.
But that’s a whole other head ache

Me thinks that the electronic brake is most helpful to the designers of the interiors.
That little switch can go almost anywhere...so doesn't limit or fuss-up the console.
I would also think that because it goes on automatically in some....many....most vehicles??? that it helps with the manufacturers "safety" features. You know....at the board room conference and all.
All of that is fine until it doesn't know that it is not working and applies itself....now your stuck.
Pull hand brakes were somewhat simpler but only if you used them regularly. Get in a car that has never had the hand brake set and activate it for the first time in a long time and it will let you know just how unhappy that little cable all encased in corrosion just is.

What, if any, are the advantages of an electronic hand brake over a mechanical one?
From the end user's perspective, in my experience, none.In the case of BMW, and much the same as their electronic steering lock, it's another unnecessary complication, solving a problem that never existed but, from their perspective, creating an opportunity for them to milk money out of you when it goes wrong... which it will.

So do you think I should buy a charger and try charging it first before buying a new battery?
Or just buy a new battery?
Check voltage again with the engine running to rule out a charging issue first. If it will charge itself you might not need to worry about the batteryOr just buy a new battery?
