I have a 2010 Mondeo 2.0 TDCI, 140bhp. Video below of someone else with the same issue, sounds the exact same as mine. If you picked the revs up slightly it goes away completely and returns again when on idle. Its been to the garage who replaced the aux belt, but did say when they tested it could not really see or hear anything wrong. When I collected it from them it was back to normal and working well but over the last 2 days this noise has returned. Anyone got any ideas? I did push them to check all pulleys and they assured me they did.

These are famous for aux belt tensioners which cause all sorts of odd noises (squeal / warbling at idle). Belt dressing or lubricant in the right place will often make it go away for a few hours, but can't cure it.

If it is not the tensioner as above post, then check the alternator clutch pulley which is a common failure.

Thanks guys. It’s booked into a garage to be looked at. I did think tensioner etc but rather than spending money trying to find the fault, this time I have given it to the pros.

My Smax is doing exactly this, did you get to the bottom it? Was it the alternator? I’m getting fed up with the grumbling and chirping noises now..
