I'm restoring a Fiat Coupe in my spare time and have found a metal trumpet like 'thingy' which sits within a rubber collar to support the airbox. Any idea what this is - base is around 1.5cm wide? I suspect it could be unique to Fiat but wanted to ask anyway as I'd like to replace it:

Sounds like an anti vibration mount of some sort.

It looks a bit like a part that might be a bit specific, try a Fiat dealer. might be surprised and they were a part bin part with many other applications on other models.

Is yours rusted or just dull ? restore that one ? re-coat it ?

Surface rust at a minimum - there's actually three of these things to attach the airbox and the one shown is probably the best in terms of condition.

Its this ^^^^^

Sits inside the rubber grommet so when you tighten down the retaining nut its doesn't crush the rubber and push the airbox on to the chassis thus nullifying any anti vibration or noise transfer cancelling properties the mounting had.

What he said ^

Try an eBay search for anti vibration mounts and isolation mounts. You might find something close enough.
