A friend has a failing CV joint. It was an MOT advisory and has the characteristic clicking noise when turning corners.

I've never done a CV joint myself and I'm not sure if it's a case of changing the joint or whether it's easier to just change the whole drive shaft.

Anyway I guesstimated it would cost them about £150 but then decided to double check with the PH wise men.

Is a job you can do on the drive with stands and a jack and is there anything in particular to watch out for. They are not flush so I might offer to do it for them to help out.

They vary widely on ease/simplicity of the job.

I have done them on 1 stand in 2 hours without taking anything off but the wheel & disconnecting a joint or 2.

I have had them take a day with most of the offending side of the suspension off.

Obviously the cost varies with the difficulty/time involved.

Only other thing is to get a good quality replacement or you will be doing it again next year, all for the want of another £20 on the price.

Thanks - and personally I do try and steer clear of the made in china e-bay specials for exactly that reason - false economy.

As Andy says, they vary a lot as to how easily it will come apart.

As for whether you change the joint only or the whole shaft, it depends on the type. Some are very user-friendly with just a circlip holding the joint in place on the splines of the shaft, and some are a complete nightmare. It's also a very messy, greasy job, so factor in whether you'll have the patience after (possibly) fighting with it all morning.

I`ve lost count how many Saxo/Pug106 driveshaft jobs I`ve done, never bothered with a CV always replaced the whole shaft, simple less than 1hr job.
Places like GSF or Euro can supply a quality GKN O/E shaft for £75-£85 just quote reg` number and what side. Also always fit a new diff` oil seal as well, they will leak if you dont.

Agree 100%. Honestly should only take an hour and I really wouldn't bother just replacing the joint when the complete shaft is so cheap.

Agreed, i've done a number of these on many 106/saxo/206/306/406 easy enough to change the whole shaft or the joint. Just bear in mind if it's the offside then you will need to undo the intermediate bearing bolts as well which are a little bit of a pain/fiddly and sometimes the bearing does get stuck in the mount.

But 100% agree fit new diff seals no matter how careful you are taking them out.
