What battery is this?
Discussion
Guessing at your car it's probably this one or similar. I don't think GSF are open today but they're my main choice - unless you want to pay halfrauds to fit it today. GSF also do an on line discount code for Pistonheaders; 25% off with PISTON25.

Looks like you need a heavy-duty 096 battery, I'd go for a Varta (same as MB/Bosch) ...

Careful there, that's no ordinary battery. It's an AGM type (absorbent glass mat) specially made for cars with stop/start systems and/or regenerative braking. If your car is fitted with either of these systems an ordinary lead-acid battery will not do. I would look for the same battery again which is an exide EK700. You will find it is a lot dearer than the ordinary battery.
Hi
It's not fitted with start stop or anything like that - this (I believe) powers all the electrics in the car though.
What would happen if a normal lead battery was used? I could do with saving money if possible, but if it's going to knacker something than it's obviously a daft thing to do.
Thanks

If Merc spent the extra to fit an AGM then you can guess there was a reason for it. As stated above AGM batteries do not gas when charged like a normal battery and as the battery is in the boot and could leak gasses in to the cabin then I would fit the AGM battery. Also they are designed to do about 9-10 times the start cycles a regular battery does so will last longer if that helps ease the pain of the extra cost
