It is possible or advisable to apply an anti squeal grease like spray copper grease. Without taking out the brake pads.
By essentially just spraying the discs?
Bad idea?
Is there another solution? Again, without taking wheels off.

I assume this is meant to be a joke?!

If not then don't spray the discs! It is the rear side of the pads that need copper grease to (possibly) help with squealing, so not the side that touches the disc, but the other side! No it can't be done without removing the wheel.

Copper grease goes all over the pads. Front and back. Goes on the back so the pads don't stick to the calipers. And the front to stop squeal.
I've seen it done.

Well wherever you have seen it done, it has been done completely wrong! The pads squeal when the back of the pad vibrates against the calipers, nothing to do with the pad touching the disc.

If you do put copper grease on the front of the pad then do let us know how the brakes feel afterwards, just please don't test them on a public road!

This guy is a troll.

If you're out there, AndrewJG, thinking "no I'm not", Then jesus fking christ stay away from your braking system and leave any future mechanical repairs to somebody competent as you are patently clueless.

Take it to a garage.

Proper brake grease should only be applied sparingly to the contact area of the rear of the pad and the caliper piston and to the metal edges that contact the caliper.

A troll? Do you even know what a troll is?
I've seen this precise question asked on many other places. Without immature responses.
And yes really. I was right there at the garage when they put the grease on ALL the pad.
A simple "I'm afraid not fella. Gonna have to take the wheels off" would suffice.

I had got the car new from that particular garage. So I didn't really have a basic for comparison.
But now I think about it. Considering the foot brake was on all four wheels. The braking force wasn't great.

Quite right someone here is definitely a troll.
I suggest you take a closer look at whom that is.

Brakes work by friction between the pad and the disc.
Grease reduces friction.
So....put grease on the contact surface between pad and disc and you remove friction.
You then have no braking.
If you cannot take this simple description on board then NEVER do any work on brakes.

Again. A simple mature. "No sorry you will have to go to a garage for that one." Would have done.
I know how brakes work. But I didn't know how copper grease worked. If I knew. Why would I've asked?
This forum is for people who don't have a clue = TO ASK!
I don't have a clue = so I asked!
I don't expect smart fking comments and being called a troll.

Out of curiosity.....at which garage did you actually see this being done?
Was it actually grease being put on the friction surface of the pad?
Was it brake cleaning fluid to remove grease/contamination?
If it was grease then that garage needs to be closed.
People are going to get killed.

Allow me to explain.

You asked these questions;

Bad idea?
And then when a helpful contributor correctly answered your queries you duly told the contributor that he/she was wrong?

Can you not see how that might mark you out as somebody who either;
  • Has no idea what they're doing and should leave their braking system to the professionals
  • Is simply disagreeing for the sake of it and being argumentative to bait people on the internet
or
  • Is ignorant to the point that they'll ask a question and then proceed to disagree with anybody who takes the time to answer negatively?

I think everyone over the age of 10 has a very good understanding of what grease or copper grease does.

You are right this forum is for people to ask about things they don't know, it is just a shock that you seem to have no knowledge of such a basic thing.

Let us know if you need help with any thing else, like how to open a door, or how objects respond to gravity...
