Everyone says these sets are the best value for money out there, but which one should I get to cover a typical range of home mechanic jobs? Do I need the full 200? Instinct says get the 150 piece set, but that might just be because it's a nice round £100:

I went for the 170 piece.

I liked the range of the ratchet spanners.

I bought the 120 piece set when it was on offer at £60, also the 9 flex head ratchet spanners for £36. Well worth it.

I've got the one which is just a metric socket set (no idea how many pieces) and I like it. It's pretty heavy to lug around as it is, I wouldn't want more random tools that I usually wont want to use at the same time in the same case. I prefer to have things like spanners separately.

I've had the 150 piece (slightly different the that one as its about 15 years old now!) and I think the only other bits Ive bought was a reducer to use smaller sockets on bigger rachet and a 8mm Hex for VW brake calipers, and a slightly bigger spanner for taking off steering wheels and for my brake caliper tool.

The screw driver bits aren't that great, so I bought the Halfords screwdriver kit which has a rachet driver, small, long and bendy lengths and a nice selection of bits in a small plastic container.

I've used it to remove an engine twice now and its served me pretty well and has never snapped or broken either.

Couldn't post a picture of it could you? The reason I ask is that I think I have the same one but the plastic case broke a year or so back and I stupidly chucked it in the bin. I have now found out that you can buy the cases seperately but don't know which one to ask for. Got sockets and whatnot all over the place atm.

Cheers.

You do realise you could've returned it under the lifetime warranty?

I have a case for I think the 90 piece set somewhere - if I can find it and it's any use you can have it for postage (I have the set in a tool chest now)

Did it! I figured if I hemmed and hawed any longer they'd put the prices back up and I'd be kicking myself.

Just bought the 200 piece set for my eldest. He wants to become a mechanic, so the lifetime warrantee will be worthwhile.

Hopefully when he qualifies, he'll be able to help keep his old man's cars on the road...

It came! Quite impressed, everything looks and feels 'right'.

(I realise this looks exactly like the picture on Halfords, but I was excited about my new tools and felt the urge to take a photo. Sad, eh?)

You can't help but marvel at a box full of shiney new tools though! Certainly feels like a quality bit of kit, I just picked up the 200 piece set today, £124 with a trade card, what a steal. hehe
