When I downshift into 2nd gear and take my foot off the clutch I get a vibration. I am not sure if I am also beginning to get a whine when moving off in first gear when I again release the clutch. The dual mass fly wheel and clutch supposedly were replaced only 3 months before I got it. Has only done 62k, focus 1.8 tdci mk1 03 plate. Anything to worry about?

First thought was DMF related. Renewed three months before ... I now wonder about that.

How many miles have you done in the car since you got it? Has this suddenly come on or been there since day one?

Same with the whine when moving off. That could be anything but gearbox issue has to be a suspect. Again recently started whining or been there since day one?

Changing a flywheel and clutch involves Gearbox removal. That means driveshafts out so Gearbox lubricant almost certainly was drained. Did they put it back in? That most certainly has happened with a car I bought years ago. Came with an Invoice for £800 for a professional gearbox rebuild by a specialist. Few weeks into my ownership suddenly lost fifth and then later fourth gears on a long trip. Limped home the eight miles in third. Gearbox off job and made a start by draining the lubricant from the box. Less than an eggcup full came out instead of the usual 2.2 Litres!

These were my sad looking toothless constant mesh pinions of fifth and fourth gears as a result of running with next to no lubricant in the Gearbox.

At no point were there any unusual noises from the poor gearbox. Just sudden loss of first fifth and then later, fourth gears.

One of the many and frequent reminders of why always in the back of my mind during fifty years of car ownership is the maxim ...

BEWARE PROFESSIONALS.
