My Son is pestering me to install an auto dipping rear view mirror to his car. Is it as simple as ordering a mirror and running some cables to the mirror or are they controlled by some sort of ECU? Knowing the prevalence for manufacturers to control everything with an ECU these days, I wouldn't be surprised to find we also need to fork out for a black box.

No idea why he would want to, they are all manufacturer specific, you would need to find one suitable & give it a go, I think, the bmw ones have a sensor behind a little "window" in the mirror, but as to whether they are "stand alone" I have no idea.

Is it too far for him to reach or something?

I personally would rather mine weren't, I like to control everything in the car to my own personal likings, no tto someones generic idea of the best way!

When I've driven cars with them fitted, I find it hard to see out of it at night, it makes it very difficult to make out what's behind you.

Believe me I have been around this discussion with him time and time again. I am a great exponent of the Keep it Simple methodology. He likes gadgets for gadgets sake.

Assuming you mean dimming, try a Ford one. Some of them eve have a switch on the mirror, so you can remove the tint at will. I retrofitted one on a previous car. Power from interior light is common.

I agree with andyiley, there is more garbage being fitted to vehicles than what can go into a house

Although I do fancy a dipping bog seat

You need to enquire what vehicles have all the controls built into the mirror

Depends on the models. The dimming interior mirror on my cars which has them also dim the door mirrors so there must be hard wiring or multiplexing wiring to link them up.
